Westport Point School. The "Point" School, District No. 6, was built in 1904 as a high school. By 1930 elementary grades were housed in the Point School. Built with two separate entrances in the front facade and a bell tower over the front gable, a renovation in the 1940s removed the bell tower and, as shown in this photo, moved the two entrances to the sides of the front facade. Presently the building is a private residence (2004).
This Westport Point School is not to be confused with an earlier Point School which existed at 1972 Main Road "just north of the hotel." Land for this school was conveyed by deed in 1809 from Christopher Gifford to Proprietors of School House in then District No. 4. A Westport Historic Commission plaque marks the now private residence which was this early school. Then evidently another earlier school house was built at the Point "south of Hammond's store" which later had a second story added. In 1824 George C. Bailey taught at the Point and "conducted said school to the entire satisfaction" of district proprietors. (Roy et al. "Early Schooldays in Westport." 1989. pp. 59-61, 86-87.) If this school remains standing, it also is a private residence.
