7:30 PM at St. John the Baptist
945 Main Road, Westport
At the advent of the 20th century a new group of immigrants arrived from Portugal and settled in Westport. With them they brought their ancient religion and desired to have the Holy Mass celebrated in their community. To that end priests came from Fall River to minister to the new Catholic community and celebrated the Mass in family homes and other places.
Fr. Leonard Hindsley with the assistance of parishioners will present a history of this group of people who founded the Catholic Church in Central Village, building a church with their own hands and eventually establishing a parish in 1930.
