A History of Westport Point United Methodist Church with Pastor Katherine Mitchell
The Second Great Awakening was the dominant religious development among Protestants in America in the first half of the nineteenth century. Through revivals and camp meetings, and the fiery rhetoric of circuit riding preachers and lay pastors, sinners were brought to an experience of conversion. The Methodist church made great gains during this period.
An organized Methodist church had emerged at Westport Point by 1830, meeting in private homes. The first Methodist church was raised in an afternoon in July of 1832. The present United Methodist Church was completed in 1884.
