Perry Davis’ Painkiller with Tony Connors
Thursday, August 21st 2008
7:30 PM at Lees Market Community Room,
Lees Market, 796 Main Road, Westport
Perry Davis (1791-1862) grew up poor and unhealthy in Westport, yet went on to make a fortune from Perry Davis Pain Killer, one of the best-selling patent medicines of the 19th century. Tony Connors will discuss Davis' Westport roots, his success against crushing odds, the secret ingredients of his patent medicine, and how all of this fits into the context of society, medicine, and economics of 19th century America.
A frequent visitor to Westport since his childhood, Tony Connors moved here permanently after retiring from a 30-year career in the computer software business. He holds a Ph.D. in American History, and has taught history at Suffolk University and, this fall, at Clark University. Tony is President of the Westport Historical Society.
