The Grist Mill Odyssey from Little Compton to Adamsville
The Grist Mill Odyssey from Little Compton to Adamsville by Thornton Simmons, 7.30PM, Thursday June 22nd, Bell School House
Gray’s Grist Mill is one of New England’s oldest, continually running grist mills. Although technically located in RI, the mill buildings and mill pond were once located within Westport’s original boundaries. With its abundant sources of water power, mills of all kinds were once commonplace throughout Westport, providing an essential service for the local economy by grinding grain and cutting timber for housing.
Thornton Simmons, the current miller of Gray’s Grist Mill, will discuss the art of milling and trace the history of various owners and millers of the grist mill. A one-time carpenter and contractor, Thornton Simmons brings a uniquely personal perspective to the story of mills as his own ancestors owned the first grist mill in Little Compton during the 17th century.
